Casement Windows

A casement is a window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges. Casement windows are hinged at the side. Windows hinged at the top are referred to as awning windows, and ones hinged at the bottom are called hoppers. They are used singly or in pairs within a common frame, in which case they are hinged on the outside. Casement windows are often held open using a casement stay.

In the UK, casement windows were the most common house window before the sash window was introduced.

Tilt and Turn

A tilt and turn window can both tilt inwards at the top or open inwards from hinges at the side. This is the most common type of window in Germany, its country of origin. It is also widespread in many other European countries. In Europe it is usual for these to be of the “turn first” type. i.e. when the handle is turned to 90 degrees the window opens in the side hung mode. With the handle turned to 180 degrees the window opens in bottom hung mode. Most usually in the UK the windows will be “tilt first” i.e. bottom hung at 90 degrees for ventilation and side hung at 180 degrees for cleaning the outer face of the glass from inside the building.

French Windows

It is called a French window when used in a pair as double-leaved opening windows with large glass panels in each window leaf, and in which the window may swing out as well as in. Constructed using a flying mullion, the french window offers you a full view with no sightlines.

Sash Windows

Sash windows are a must-have for many self-builders wishing to give their homes a traditional appearance, but it’s not always easy to get the style right.

A traditional ‘sliding sash’ window is usually made up of two sashes that slide up and down, one in front, and one behind, in vertical grooves, counterbalanced by lead weights on cords — though in many modern windows, the weights have been replaced with springs. Sliding sash windows can be opened at the top or bottom, or both, depending on the design, and though traditionally they have no outward swing, many modern designs tilt in and out for easy cleaning.
